Programme
Historical Market Spectacle
History comes to life at the original sites of the Reformation:
On the market square in front of the Renaissance town hall, craftspeople demonstrate their medieval crafts. Contemporary music invites you to dance and linger in the taverns. Street performers and jugglers bring the festival to life.
In the Cranach Courtyard, you’ll find honey, pottery, soaps, wine and music in a historic setting.
In the town church, visitors can explore the church where Luther preached and the famous Cranach altar.
You can reach the castle church via Coswiger Straße or Schlossstraße – both of which are transformed into bustling trade routes. In front of the world-famous Thesentür, another market scene awaits you, featuring mead in earthenware jugs, baked goods and wooden toys.
On the Schlosswiese, historical societies set up camp – a colourful medieval spectacle featuring music, magic and juggling.
The Grand Lantern Parade –
the highlight of the Reformation Festival
As the sun sinks behind the rooftops of Lutherstadt in the evening, Wittenberg glows in the radiance of countless lights:
A colourful procession winds its way through the old town, featuring colourful lanterns, candlelight and music – accompanied by minstrels, torchbearers and historical societies.
Meeting point: at the Luther House at 5.00 pm
Destination: Schlosswiese
Open to all generations:
- Children proudly display their lanterns – whether traditional or creatively designed with a Reformation theme.
- Families enjoy the special atmosphere.
- Music groups will keep the mood lively along the way.
Imaginative (and friendly) fancy dress is also welcome – making the procession a cheerful, colourful celebration for all generations (it just so happens to be Halloween too, so we didn’t want to leave that out!).
At the finish line, the Schlosswiese, guests can look forward to an atmospheric finale with music, lights, warming soup, punch and perhaps even a short blessing from the castle church.
Don’t have a suitable lantern yet? No problem!
On the Schlosswiese, you can design your own creative lantern. All the materials are provided – you just need to pop along!
